How Limiting Beliefs Prevent Business Success
Since I started as an EFT practitioner and mindset coach in 2008, I’ve seen it more times than I can count. Smart, talented, creative, hard-working people who simply cannot break through to the next level of success in their business, no matter how hard they try. What do all of these people have in common? You guessed it: Limiting beliefs.
Regardless of what your goals are for your business, limiting beliefs are nearly always going to be a part of the picture.
Let’s look at some of the effects that limiting beliefs can have on your business:
Not going after goals because you’re convinced you’ll fail
Not going after goals because you're afraid something bad will happen if you succeed
Low self-esteem and/or confidence
Being burdened by fears based on limiting beliefs
Being shackled by limiting beliefs about money, causing an inability to take necessary actions toward achieving your goals
Imposter syndrome
Finding & Releasing the Roots of Your Limiting Beliefs
Like most other inner blocks to success, like fears, self-doubt, and money blocks, limiting beliefs often have roots that need to be uncovered, identified, and released before the belief(s) they gave rise to can be successfully removed.
An example of a root of a limiting belief is someone’s mom telling her as a child that writing isn’t her strong suit.
This is a painful experience, which instantly becomes the life-long limiting belief, “I’m not good at writing.”
As you can imagine, this is not a helpful belief for an entrepreneur to have, because almost all entrepreneurs have to do at least some writing, whether it’s blog posts, newsletters, ad copy, lead magnet PDFs, sales pages, or all of the above.
I see this limiting belief in many of my clients, and it leads to things like: Writer’s block, procrastination, inconsistent communication with mailing list, and stress, fear, and low confidence around anything that requires writing.
Though the mom in this example may have been well-intentioned, the result for her daughter is pain, low confidence in her writing ability, and a firm belief that she’s not a good writer, and never will be.
To remove the limiting belief, “I’m not good at writing,” it will almost certainly be necessary to heal the painful memory that caused the belief, so that it feels totally peaceful, causing no stress, upset, shame, embarrassment, or anger.
The next step is to tap out the belief itself until it is a zero, meaning that it simply no longer feels true.
Once the woman in this example is free from the belief, writing will automatically stop being a struggle for her, and she may even come to enjoy it. Also, her writing will likely improve.
That’s because writing is just like everything else—the more you do it, the better you get at it.
The Confusing Paradox of Limiting Beliefs
An important thing to note about this example is that many people who believe that they aren’t good writers also believe that they are good writers.
They can even have tons of proof that they are, in fact, good writers, such as getting A’s in English, or even winning a writing award or having a best-selling book.
Huh?
Let me explain. You see, with limiting beliefs, it’s very common to consciously believe one thing, like “I write really well,” while your emotional truth is actually, “I suck at writing.”
How can you believe two totally contradictory things at once? Well, my friend, it’s called being human.
The important thing to remember is that when it comes to beliefs, your emotional truth will ALWAYS win.
Therefore, it’s critical that your emotional truth is what we focus on with our tapping.
So let’s look at the very common entrepreneurial belief: I look/sound terrible on video.
Some of the effects of this belief include:
Never doing videos, which could go a long way toward building your audience and growing your revenue
Doing videos while looking and sounding nervous and uncomfortable
Making videos and never publishing them
Needless to say, none of these things are good for business.
They prevent entrepreneurs from reaching the people they’re meant to serve, they prevent them from achieving their business goals, and they also make them feel stressed-out and bad about themselves.
“Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right.” — Henry Ford
Here’s another common one: “Achieving my business goals is going to be really hard.”
Some of the effects of this belief include:
Procrastination
Creating a self-fulfilling prophecy and unconsciously making things harder than they need to be
Self-sabotage
Working hard but not working smart
Again, this belief is not good for business!
Okay, let’s look at one more example to further illustrate my point: Marketing is manipulative.
Oh, my goodness, are there a lot of entrepreneurs being held back by this one!
Here are just a few of its business stifling effects:
Not marketing at all and missing out on untold profits
Not marketing at all and therefore not reaching countless people who need what you have to offer and whose lives could be dramatically improved by it
Marketing, but doing it in a way that conveys shame and embarrassment instead of confidence and enthusiasm about an offering of yours which you created to improve lives
As you can see from these examples, there are many different types of limiting beliefs that hold people back in their businesses.
Others include beliefs about money, beliefs about yourself and your abilities, beliefs about what other people think and feel about you and your business, beliefs about success, beliefs about failure, beliefs about sales, beliefs about marketing, beliefs about your industry, and on, and on.
The great news is that any belief can be released with EFT tapping, and the benefits of doing so are incredibly powerful.
Here are just a few of them:
Increased profits
Accomplishing tasks with less effort and more flow
Booking more clients
Freedom from fears which are holding you back
More confidence
You deserve to make your dreams of a wildly successful business a reality, and you releasing the limiting beliefs that are holding you back will help you make it happen.
